South Gyeongsang Province is advancing environmentally responsible maritime technology through sea trials of a diesel and ammonia dual-fuel vessel. The 500-ton-class ship, developed as a global first, is designed to reduce emissions by partially replacing conventional diesel fuel with ammonia, a zero-carbon energy source that produces no carbon dioxide when burned. By combining ammonia with diesel, the vessel can significantly lower overall carbon emissions compared to traditional ships.

The demonstration trials will evaluate performance, safety, and fuel efficiency, supporting the future adoption of cleaner marine fuels. Results are expected to contribute to the development of standards and regulations for ammonia-powered vessels, an area that remains largely undeveloped worldwide. Backed by government investment and collaboration between industry and research institutions, the project positions South Gyeongsang Province as a leader in sustainable shipping and supports global efforts to decarbonize the maritime sector.
