Sustainable Transportation Stations
Abu Dhabi Launched 'Barq' for Electric Vehicles
Debra John — January 9, 2026Abu Dhabi launched 'Barq,' an electric vehicle charging initiative led by the Department of Energy in partnership with TAQA Distribution, to support the transition to low-emissions transportation. The program contributes to environmental sustainability by expanding access to ultra-fast charging infrastructure, reducing reliance on internal combustion vehicles, and supporting lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The initiative aligns with the Emirate’s long-term sustainability objectives by enabling wider adoption of electric mobility through reliable, high-capacity charging stations. More than "50 chargers with capacities of up to 360 kW are being installed at strategic public locations, improving accessibility and reducing range-related barriers for EV users."
By delivering approximately "100 kilometers of driving range in around three minutes, the stations minimize charging time and energy inefficiencies." Collectively, the Barq network supports cleaner urban air quality, improved energy efficiency, and a transportation system designed to reduce environmental impact.
