Aluminum Recycling Efforts
Milan Residents Can Now Recycle Their Aluminum Coffee Capsules Easily
Kanesa D — March 12, 2026Milan residents can dispose of their aluminum coffee capsules in bags used for light multi-material waste collection. The project features a collaboration between Amsa, A2A Ambiente, Aluminum Recycling Consortium Cial, and Nespresso. Under this, the capsules are sent to the Muggiano plant managed by A2A Ambiente, are washed and processed through pyrolysis to generate syngas, an intermediate for producing synthetic fuels and other chemicals. This allows the facility to enhance its ability to seperate lightweight, ultra-thin aluminum packaging. This aligns the company with the EU Packaging Regulation, which mandates the inclusion of coffee capsules in seperate collections.
Cial has hopes that this process will increase aluminum packaging recycling in Milan by 10%, building upon its current recycling count of 1,200 tonnes of aluminum packaging annually.
