CNPC Launches a Full-Chain Low-Carbon Ethylene Production System

Carbon capture ethylene combines renewable electricity, carbon capture and CO₂ reuse to reduce emissions across petrochemical manufacturing. China National Petroleum Corporation's new full-chain low-carbon ethylene project uses renewable power from onsite photovoltaic facilities, electric-driven compressors and an integrated carbon capture system that recovers low-concentration CO₂ from production processes. The captured CO₂ and recovered hydrogen are reused to support the production of blue hydrogen, blue ammonia and lower-carbon fertilizers, creating a more circular industrial system while reducing annual carbon emissions by an estimated 1.37 million metric tons.

This approach demonstrates how emissions-intensive industries can integrate carbon capture directly into large-scale manufacturing instead of relying solely on end-of-pipe solutions. As demand grows for lower-carbon industrial materials, companies that combine renewable energy, carbon reuse and process electrification can improve resource efficiency, strengthen long-term competitiveness and support broader industrial decarbonization without disrupting essential chemical production.
