Pusan National University Reduces Heat Loss in Liquid Hydrogen Storage

Cryogenic hydrogen tanks are essential for expanding the hydrogen economy, but minimizing heat ingress remains one of the biggest challenges for storing liquid hydrogen efficiently. Researchers at Pusan National University evaluated a cryogenic sacrificial fluid-assisted insulation system that redirects incoming heat away from liquid hydrogen by circulating liquefied natural gas or liquid nitrogen through strategically placed cooling channels. Rather than relying solely on thicker insulation, the approach targets the tank's primary thermal bridges to significantly reduce heat ingress and boil-off losses. The findings demonstrate that precise channel placement can have a greater impact than simply increasing cooling capacity or insulation material.

For hydrogen infrastructure developers and maritime operators, more efficient storage systems could lower fuel losses, improve transport economics, and increase the practicality of liquid hydrogen for shipping and other energy-intensive applications as global demand for low-carbon fuels continues to grow.
