Ammonia-To-Hydrogen Terminals
Höegh Evi Advances Floating Hydrogen Terminals with Ammonia Cracking
Mursal Rahman — July 2, 2026Ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking systems are advancing hydrogen infrastructure by converting transported ammonia into high-purity hydrogen through modular conversion technology suitable for both floating and land-based terminals. Höegh Evi and Nord Gas Solutions recently validated a pilot system that achieved hydrogen purity exceeding 99.5%, while demonstrating strong conversion efficiency, operational flexibility, and scalability. Designed for industrial deployment, the modular architecture enables floating import terminals to supply hydrogen at large volumes, helping ports receive ammonia shipments and convert them close to end users.
For businesses, ammonia cracking can reduce the logistical challenges of transporting hydrogen by leveraging existing ammonia supply chains and port infrastructure. Floating terminals also offer a faster deployment pathway than building permanent onshore facilities, improving flexibility for emerging hydrogen markets. As industrial demand for low-carbon hydrogen grows, modular ammonia-to-hydrogen systems could accelerate investment in import infrastructure while supporting reliable, large-scale hydrogen distribution across regions transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
