Wildfire Restoration Carbon Projects
Mast Reforestation Sold Out Its MT1 Wildfire Carbon Credits
Adam Harrie — April 23, 2026Post-wildfire reforestation company Mast Reforestation sold out all 4,277 biomass burial carbon removal credits from its MT1 project in southern Montana in less than six weeks after issuance. Buyers such as Bain & Company and BMO backed the project, which involves burying over 10 million pounds of wildfire-affected trees underground rather than burning them, preventing CO₂ emissions for a certified 100-year period.
Proceeds from the credit sales are funding replanting at the project site, where over 6,000 native seedlings were grown from locally adapted seeds and planted on April 15. The project site was impacted by the 2021 Poverty Flats Fire, which caused extensive damage, making natural recovery unlikely for decades without active restoration efforts.
As wildfire frequency grows across western North America, Mast Reforestation shows how biomass burial can turn post-fire damage into ecosystem recovery.
