Open-Source Grid Planning Platforms
The Linux Foundation has launched open-source grid planning platforms through OpenGrid, an initiative designed to improve how electricity infrastructure is modeled and developed worldwide. Rather than replacing existing software, OpenGrid creates shared standards, APIs and a centralized data hub that allow commercial and open-source planning tools to exchange information more easily.
Its first application, OpenGrid Translator, is planned for 2027 and will enable data and models to move between widely used platforms. Future capabilities are expected to include open solvers, no-code interfaces and AI-assisted data preparation.
For utilities, regulators and energy developers, greater interoperability could reduce technical barriers and accelerate planning for generation, storage and grid connections. For software providers, OpenGrid creates opportunities to build compatible tools and services around shared infrastructure while expanding access to advanced grid modeling in fast-growing electricity markets.
