Mitsubishi Electric was selected by Japan's JOGMEC to verify satellite methane detection technology capable of identifying and quantifying greenhouse gas emission sources. The project runs through March 2027, with Mitsubishi Electric collaborating with Satellite Data Services, JGC Corporation and GHGSat to develop a service that visualizes emissions for companies, local governments and other users.

The project builds on a tip-and-cue approach that combines wide-area observations from the GOSAT-GW satellite with GHGSat's high-resolution satellite constellation to pinpoint suspected methane leak locations for detailed follow-up monitoring. Mitsubishi Electric will also evaluate applying these measurements to the UN-led Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, an international framework aimed at improving transparency around methane emissions.

The verification project shows how satellite technology is becoming essential infrastructure for detecting leaks earlier and improving accountability across energy supply chains.
