The Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University has entered into a collaborative agreement with IotaComm, a connectivity solutions provider, to establish a specialized testing environment for LoRaWAN technology on the university campus. This testbed is conceived as a practical research and development platform focused on the Internet of Things, with intended applications in areas such as intelligent building management, utility grid modernization, and environmental observation.

The initial deployment of this collaboration will involve installing gateways in several campus buildings, utilizing IotaComm's proprietary IotaWAVE network, which operates on a combination of licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies. A pilot project is already underway with Revert Technologies. In this iteration, the companies are employing smart plugs to collect detailed energy consumption data with the goal of identifying inefficiencies and potential cost savings.
