Waste-to-Biomaterial Startups

Tydra Labs Raised $1.2M to Scale Its Chitin-Based Biomaterials

Tydra Labs closed a $1.2 million CAD pre-seed round, led by Spring Impact Capital, to advance its chitin biomaterial process toward commercial scale. The Vancouver company extracts chitin from crustacean shells and fungal waste using a proprietary method that avoids the toxic chemicals associated with conventional processing.

The materials are biodegradable and strong enough to be used as plastic alternatives for packaging, natural preservatives in food, active ingredients in cosmetics and soil health inputs in agriculture. The funding will support a pilot project to expand production and establish early consumer partnerships.

Tydra Labs shows how organic waste that is currently unused can become the foundation for a new generation of performance materials that can compete on both cost and environmental impact.
