Waste-to-Energy Landfill Conversions

Waste-to-energy landfill conversions are transforming traditional disposal sites into facilities that recover electricity and reusable materials from municipal waste. Vietnam Waste Solutions is proposing an expansion of its 341-acre Da Phuoc Integrated Solid Waste Facility outside Ho Chi Minh City, adding a 50- to 60-MW waste-to-energy plant and specialized recycling lines. The site already captures landfill gas to generate electricity for its operations and processes up to 6,500 tons of municipal waste daily.

The proposed expansion would recover energy from residual waste that cannot be economically reused or recycled while reducing the volume requiring long-term burial. The facility also treats and reuses water for operational needs, including equipment washing, irrigation and dust control. For waste-management operators, combining disposal, recycling, water reuse and power generation can create additional value from existing infrastructure while diversifying revenue opportunities and supporting growing municipal waste-management requirements.
