Glass-Encapsulated Colorants

Green Science Alliance Uses Silica to Improve Colorant Durability

Green Science Alliance has developed glass-encapsulated colorants that use dense silica structures to improve the durability of organic pigments, dyes and fluorescent dyes. Rather than simply coating the surface, the approach traps coloring materials within non-porous silica spheres. This structure helps protect the enclosed colorants from oxygen, moisture and other atmospheric elements, improving weather, light, heat and chemical resistance while maintaining vivid coloration.

The material could expand how colorants are incorporated into paints, coatings, printing inks, plastics, cosmetics, automotive components and construction materials. Its increased heat resistance also enables sensitive dyes and pigments to be combined with higher-melting-point resins. Green Science Alliance says its manufacturing method is designed to be scalable, cost-effective and suitable for mass production. These characteristics could give manufacturers access to longer-lasting color materials while opening commercial opportunities for the technology across multiple industries that require durable, stable and easily dispersed pigments.
