High-polluting school buses are the focus of a new initiative approved by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), which has "allocated up to $78.2 million to replace 286 older diesel models with zero-emission alternatives." In doing so, this transition is intended to significantly reduce harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which contribute to smog, respiratory illness, and long-term environmental degradation.

The funding also supports the installation of charging infrastructure needed to operate the new vehicles reliably and efficiently. By enabling the deployment of battery-electric buses, the initiative will lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality, and reduce children’s daily exposure to exhaust-related pollutants.

Overall, the program represents a major investment in cleaner transportation, supporting healthier communities and accelerating the region’s progress toward long-term environmental sustainability.
