In-Conduit Hydropower Systems

In-conduit hydropower systems are turning existing water networks into electricity-generating assets, as ClearPower Global prepares to deploy its modular turbines within Peru’s Tinajones system. The $35 million project is expected to generate approximately 20 MW of hydropower, representing up to 184 GWh annually. Rather than constructing a conventional hydropower facility, ClearPower installs compact turbines at suitable elevation drops and pressure points while preserving the infrastructure’s primary water-delivery function.

The approach allows water operators to recover energy that would otherwise go unused while avoiding the need for entirely new generation infrastructure. Under its 30-year concession, ClearPower will operate and maintain the system while providing PEOT with at least 1.5 million PEN annually from generated power. For ClearPower, the project demonstrates how its modular platform can create recurring revenue while expanding into water systems with similar energy-recovery opportunities worldwide.
