Caudal Energy Raised €4.9M to Scale Its Tidal Energy System
Adam Harrie — May 30, 2026Caudal Energy raised €4.9 million, led by Oxford Science Enterprises and Empirical Ventures, to advance its oscillating foil tidal system, a fin-based approach that generates power through hydrodynamic lift rather than turbine rotation and operates in flows of 3 knots and above. The tidal energy, a predictable renewable power system, targets mid-flow sites, unlocking an estimated 10 times more deployment locations than traditional systems and expanding the potential UK tidal resource from 11GW to 60GW.
Unlike wind and solar, tidal energy is fully forecastable years in advance, providing stable baseload generation that reduces grid balancing costs.
As the energy transition demands more predictable renewable sources, Caudal Energy shows how rethinking tidal energy from hydrodynamic first principles can expand a niche technology into a commercially scalable infrastructure play.
