Low-Tech Carbon Removal Solutions

Mati Carbon is Scaling Agriculture-Integrated Climate Mitigation

A new wave of climate innovation is emerging through low-tech, scalable solutions, as demonstrated by Mati Carbon’s approach to removing carbon from the atmosphere using basalt rock. Detailed in a recent report, the startup’s method, known as enhanced rock weathering, relies on spreading finely crushed volcanic rock over farmland, where it reacts with rainwater to capture and store carbon naturally over time.

Unlike more complex technologies such as direct air capture, this approach is designed to be cost-effective and easier to scale, while delivering added benefits for agriculture. As the basalt breaks down, it enriches soil with key nutrients, improving moisture retention and increasing crop yields, reportedly by an average of 20%, for small-scale farmers.

The model also introduces a dual-impact system, combining climate mitigation with economic support. By partnering with farmers across regions like India, Tanzania, and Zambia, the initiative not only removes carbon but also contributes to greater food security and income stability.
