Enhanced Geothermal Power Startups
Mazama Energy raised $135 million in an oversubscribed Series B to develop horizontal wells targeting super-hot rock capable of generating 15 megawatts of electricity per well. The startup's first site in Oregon can now produce an estimated 10 gigawatts, a sharp upward revision from last year's 5-gigawatt estimate, with electricity generation expected to begin next year.
Unlike traditional geothermal projects, Mazama drills to depths of about 15,000 feet, reaching temperatures of 750°F that turn water into a supercritical fluid capable of absorbing far more energy than ordinary steam. This allows each well to produce up to 10 times more power than conventional geothermal technology. The company aims to complete its first site by 2030, ultimately generating 200 megawatts.
Enhanced geothermal startups like Mazama are emerging as a faster-advancing alternative, offering the potential for reliable, round-the-clock clean power without the emissions associated with fossil fuel generation.
