Minas Gerais inaugurated its first biomethane plant, the Zeg Biogás facility in Tupaciguara, which produces biomethane from vinasse, a by‑product of sugarcane processing, and began operations following an approximate €14.3 million investment by a Zeg and Bioenergética Aroeira partnership. The plant is expected to contribute to regional energy diversification and security, create around 70 direct and indirect jobs, and stimulate local supply‑chain activity through opportunities for suppliers and service providers.

The project launched alongside the Biorota BR‑050 initiative to connect renewable producers and consumers in the region, and state officials highlighted that renewables already account for more than 30% of Minas Gerais’ energy matrix, with biomass as a key component. The facility is presented as advancing circular‑economy principles by converting agricultural waste into cleaner fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions relative to fossil alternatives, and supporting policy goals for a lower‑carbon energy transition.
