Argonne Lab Will Use AI to Speed Up Its Nuclear Energy Deployment

Argonne National Laboratory secured funding to lead a portfolio of AI-enabled nuclear energy deployment projects under the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, a national initiative combining AI, supercomputing and quantum systems to accelerate scientific discovery. Argonne will develop digital twins to advance nuclear fuel recycling and streamline regulatory approval, alongside AI-driven forecasting for water availability, flood risk and extreme weather.
Additional projects include AI-designed microelectronics that operate at extremely low temperatures, optimized quantum circuit designs for nuclear physics and more sensitive quantum sensors. Argonne is also partnering on Prometheus, an Idaho National Laboratory-led initiative integrating agentic AI across the nuclear energy lifecycle, from design and licensing through manufacturing and operations.
