General Atomics has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop design concepts for a Fusion Blanket Component Test Facility in San Diego, targeting one of the final unsolved engineering hurdles in fusion energy research. The proposed facility would test full-scale fusion blanket systems, including lithium-based materials that line the inside of a fusion vessel to capture energy and produce the tritium needed to sustain reactions, at a scale never attempted before.

The collaboration also includes Idaho National Laboratory, Kyoto Fusioneering, and UC San Diego, with seed funding from the DOE. If approved for full construction, the facility would use existing infrastructure at GA's Magnet Technologies Center to accelerate the development timeline.

This public-private partnership signals that fusion power is moving from a scientific milestone to a practical engineering challenge, with commercial viability now a realistic near-term goal.
