Electric Waste Collection Fleets

Republic Services Electrifies Coconut Creek's Collection Fleet

Republic Services and the City of Coconut Creek are electrifying residential waste services with Florida’s first fully electric recycling and waste collection fleet. The six-vehicle fleet uses McNeilus Volterra EVs, purpose-built electric trucks designed to provide all-day collection without tailpipe emissions. The vehicles also deliver quieter neighborhood operations and incorporate 360-degree cameras, lane-departure sensors, automated emergency braking and enhanced driver visibility to support safer collection.

For municipalities and waste management providers, the deployment demonstrates how heavy-duty fleet electrification can extend into routine public services while maintaining operational requirements. Republic Services can use the Coconut Creek rollout as a model for expanding electric collection vehicles into additional municipal contracts. Cities adopting similar fleets could reduce local transportation emissions and noise, while manufacturers gain opportunities as demand grows for specialized electric commercial vehicles.
