Packaging Drop-Off Initiatives
The SDO Action Collaborative Tackles Specialty Pet Food Packaging
Laura McQuarrie — March 3, 2026Building on the Pet Sustainability Coalition's previous packaging pilots, including the Flex Forward program, the Pet Sustainability Coalition and Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced the formation of the Pet Specialty Store-Drop-Off (SDO) Action Collaborative to tackle flexible plastic pet food packaging.
Many pet food bags are made with multiple, fused layers of material and as a result, they're not easy to recycle or accepted in curbside recycling initiatives. Hill’s Pet Nutrition is the pioneering partner of the new SDO Action Collaborative, and aims to reduce the amount of flexible plastic pet food packaging that ends up in the landfill with the cooperation of consumers at participating store drop-offs.
The next phase, Pilot Program Implementation, requires support across every link in the chain, from brands and organizations willing to back the program financially, to retailers offering collection space, logistics partners managing pickup and transport, and recyclers committed to processing the specialized flexible film at the other end.
