Fusion Reactor Supply Chains
Proxima Fusion has committed €140 million to build a factory to produce fusion-grade superconducting tape, a critical component for generating the magnetic fields that contain plasma in its reactor design.
The Germany-based startup will fund the factory with a mix of public and private capital, including €21 million from the state of Lower Saxony, months after raising €411 million in a round that made it one of the best-funded fusion startups globally. Proxima's demonstration plant alone will require 20,000 kilometers of the material, and its planned commercial power plant will need twice that amount.
As fusion startups scale toward commercial deployment, Proxima's move to build domestic superconducting tape production signals the industry's growing focus on securing its own supply chains rather than relying on concentrated overseas manufacturing for critical reactor components.
