Climate-Smart Farmer Funding Programs
Whole Foods Launched Its Fund for Sustainable Young Farmers
Adam Harrie — August 8, 2026Whole Foods Market and the National Young Farmers Coalition launched the 'Next Generation Farmer Fund,' providing financial and technical assistance to beginning farmers under 40 who are adopting climate-smart, environmentally sustainable practices. As the founding financial partner, Whole Foods committed to matching participating food brands' contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000, to generate more than $1 million for farmers navigating rising costs, land-access barriers and climate-related disruptions.
The fund launches alongside supporting partners, including Lundberg Family Farms, PepsiCo and Perdue, and coincides with Whole Foods' 2025 Impact Report, which detailed the restoration of more than 1,000 acres of marginal cropland into native ecosystems and the elimination of 51 million paper checkout bags.
This initiative signals that major grocery retailers are stepping in to reduce entry barriers for a new generation positioning itself as climate stewards for the food system's long-term resilience.
