Croatia Introduced Zagorje Mountains Nature Park as a Protected Area
Debra John — April 24, 2026Croatia has designated the Zagorje Mountains Nature Park as a protected natural area, marking its first such declaration since Dinara Nature Park.
This addition contributes to the country’s broader conservation efforts, "with approximately 38.6% of its land now under protection." The park encompasses diverse landscapes, including oak forests, historic settlements, and geologically significant cave systems, reflecting both ecological and cultural value.
Zagorje Mountains Nature Park supports sustainable tourism through a network of over 150 kilometers of maintained hiking and cycling trails. These routes are designed to encourage low-impact exploration while guiding visitors through scenic viewpoints, rural communities, and historically significant sites such as castles and traditional villages. By promoting eco-friendly travel practices and preserving natural habitats, the park aligns with Croatia’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible tourism development, offering a structured setting for nature-based recreation.
