Caravel Bio, a company engineering industrial-strength proteins from discovery to deployment, has achieved a 12-fold increase in enzyme stability under industrially relevant conditions within just six months of joining the Shell GameChanger program. As part of this development, the brand has received funding to assess the potential of its novel biocatalyst development technology for enabling lower-cost, more efficient carbon capture.
Caravel Bio's proprietary protein engineering platform aims to replace traditional amine-based solvents with potassium bicarbonate as a carbon capture solvent. This substitution has the potential to significantly reduce the energy requirements and overall cost of capturing CO₂. In doing so, the innovation addresses a key barrier that has historically limited the economic viability and scalability of carbon capture projects.
