Biotechnology firm Ginkgo Bioworks has extended a major collaborative agreement with the agricultural science corporation Bayer, thereby continuing a joint initiative that started in 2017. The central objective of this alliance is to advance the creation of agricultural biologicals, with a specific emphasis on microbial solutions that can aid in nitrogen fixation for crops. Under the conditions of the arrangement, Bayer holds the exclusive rights to bring the resulting products to the commercial market, where they are intended to work alongside conventional synthetic fertilizers. Ginkgo Bioworks' role involves utilizing its specialized research and development infrastructure to identify and refine potential biological agents. The collaboration is structured to tackle a range of pressing contemporary agricultural needs, including crop protection and carbon sequestration.
