Amazon and XPRIZE have formed a partnership to address supply chain vulnerabilities associated with critical minerals that underpin clean energy technologies. The collaboration supports the XPRIZE Critical Minerals competition, which seeks scalable solutions for sourcing, processing and reusing materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper and rare earth elements. According to Amazon, current mineral supply chains are highly concentrated and exposed to disruption, creating risks for energy security and slowing decarbonisation efforts. The initiative aims to advance circularity by encouraging innovations that keep materials in use for longer through improved recovery, recycling and redesign. It also aligns with Amazon’s broader sustainability commitments, including its Climate Pledge and investments in renewable energy projects and electric vehicle deployment.

The partnership also highlights the social and environmental impacts associated with mineral extraction. Both organisations emphasise the importance of responsible sourcing practices that protect workers and communities while reducing ecological harm. The competition invites participation from startups, researchers and industry groups to develop solutions that strengthen supply chain resilience and support a just transition. XPRIZE notes that the programme is intended to generate technologies and approaches that governments and investors can adopt with confidence, helping to build a more sustainable and equitable foundation for the clean energy transition.
