Closed-Loop Battery Recycling

Princeton NuEnergy Recycles SK Battery Manufacturing Scrap

Princeton NuEnergy is advancing closed-loop battery recycling through a collaboration with SK Battery America to recover manufacturing scrap from its facilities in Commerce, Georgia. Rather than breaking cathode materials down into individual elements, PNE’s Cathode-to-Cathode® process is designed to preserve and rejuvenate their engineered structure. The recovered cathode active material could then potentially return to battery manufacturing, keeping valuable materials within the production cycle.

PNE is also exploring a recycling facility near SKBA’s manufacturing operations, which could shorten transportation distances and create a more localized material recovery system. The collaboration gives SKBA a pathway for recovering value from production scrap while providing PNE with material streams for its direct recycling platform. For the broader battery industry, localized cathode recovery could reduce demand for newly sourced inputs, strengthen domestic critical-material supply chains, and support more integrated relationships between battery manufacturers and recycling companies.
