Compact Hydrogen Production Modules

Metacon is advancing compact hydrogen production modules with a 20 MW alkaline electrolysis system designed to reduce the physical footprint and infrastructure requirements of large-scale plants. The multi-level configuration positions electrolyzer stacks below gas-handling and cooling equipment, shortening piping, electrical and utility connections while maintaining access for operation and maintenance. Multiple modules can also be installed in parallel as production capacity increases.

Compared with conventional building-based installations, Metacon estimates the design can reduce steel structure costs by up to 30%, piping-related costs by up to 50% and area-related infrastructure costs by up to 70%, depending on project conditions. The repeatable modular format could simplify transportation, installation and future expansion while eliminating the need for a surrounding factory building in some projects. For hydrogen developers, these reductions could improve project economics, particularly in locations where available land is constrained or expensive, while supporting more standardized large-scale deployments.
