Hydrogen-Powered Data Centers
ECL & PowerCell Group Grew Its Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Data Centers
Adam Harrie — July 16, 2026ECL and PowerCell Group announced a partnership to deploy hydrogen fuel-cell data centers across ECL's AI infrastructure platform, backed by a firm purchase order for PowerCell PS190 systems and a non-binding agreement for approximately 300 MW of additional hydrogen capacity. The initial deployment will begin at ECL's 35 MW Santa Clara campus, integrating containerized fuel-cell systems into ECL's FlexGrid microgrid alongside grid power, natural gas and battery storage.
The partnership builds on two years of operational data from ECL's Mountain View facility, where hydrogen has served as the primary power source since 2024. Bosch, PowerCell's largest shareholder and manufacturing partner, provides the industrial-scale production and U.S. service infrastructure needed to support ECL's expansion.
The partnership signals that hydrogen fuel cells are moving from proof of concept toward a viable industrial-scale power solution for AI data centers.
