Finnfund has made a follow on investment of US$5 million in Communication & Renewable Energy Infrastructure, bringing its total commitment to US$10 million to support hybrid solar systems for telecom infrastructure in South Sudan. The financing is backed by the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus under the Africa Connected programme and is intended to scale modernisation and expansion of renewable energy at telecom sites.
The capital will support deployment and upgrading of hybrid solar systems across 499 MTN South Sudan sites, with project reporting indicating a rise in renewable energy use at the sites from around 11 percent to 42 percent following earlier modernisation work. The investment is presented as advancing both climate objectives and digital inclusion by improving network reliability, reducing diesel dependence, and enabling longer term energy as a service models for mobile network operations.
