The AfDB Launched a $3.9M USD Technical Project to Develop Energy
Colin Smith — February 3, 2026The African Development Bank approved a two year, USD 3.9 million technical assistance project in early 2026 to support implementation of National Energy Compacts across 13 African countries under the Mission 300 initiative, aiming to translate policy commitments into tangible electricity connections.
The programme is structured to provide upstream technical assistance covering policy implementation, project preparation, regulatory reform, and capacity building to accelerate household, business, and public institution electrification. Activities include feasibility and bankability assessments, support for grid and off grid solutions, strengthening of institutional frameworks, and measures to mobilise private and commercial finance. The AfDB frames the project as complementary to broader financing instruments and as a means to de‑risk investments and improve project readiness for Mission 300, which targets 300 million new connections by 2030. Expected outcomes emphasise increased project pipeline quality, faster deployment of distributed and centralised generation, and enhanced coordination between national authorities and development partners.
