Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Engines
Weichai Certifies a China Vi-Compliant Hydrogen Engine
Mursal Rahman — July 10, 2026Heavy-duty hydrogen engines are moving closer to large-scale deployment as Weichai Power's WP15 becomes the first hydrogen internal combustion engine to meet China's stringent China VI emissions standard for heavy-duty vehicles. Designed for long-haul trucks, mining equipment, ports, and industrial applications, the 14.6-liter engine combines hydrogen direct injection with more than 90% component commonality with conventional diesel platforms. This compatibility helps reduce manufacturing, maintenance, and retrofitting costs while delivering zero-carbon operation, high power output, and improved fuel flexibility for demanding transportation environments.
The certification strengthens confidence in hydrogen combustion as a practical alternative for sectors where battery-electric systems may face range or payload limitations. Manufacturers, fleet operators, and infrastructure providers can leverage existing engine production expertise while gradually expanding hydrogen-powered operations. As regulations tighten worldwide, certified hydrogen engines could accelerate industrial decarbonization, support investment in hydrogen supply networks, and diversify clean transportation technologies for heavy-duty applications.
