Low Carbon Fuel Standards

Carbon Direct Released Its Criteria for High-Quality Low Carbon Fuels

Carbon Direct released its Criteria for High-Quality Low Carbon Fuels, consolidating six core principles into a unified reference for voluntary market buyers navigating the rapidly expanding and increasingly complex low-carbon fuels procurement landscape. The framework addresses social and environmental integrity, carbon accounting, additionality, feedstock sourcing and leakage—areas where existing certifications alone often fall short of providing a complete picture.

The criteria require producers to maintain end-to-end chain-of-custody documentation, conduct environmental risk assessments and demonstrate genuine additionality using financial metrics, while also accounting for consequential impacts such as land use change and feedstock displacement. The resource builds on Carbon Direct's prior work with Microsoft to develop carbon dioxide removal criteria.

The framework shows how standardized quality benchmarks can help corporate buyers evaluate low-carbon fuel claims more consistently and identify solutions with credible climate impact.
