Kochi Water Metro is Recognized at the Sustainable Transport Awards 2026

Kochi Water Metro received an 'Honorable Mention' at the Sustainable Transport Awards 2026, with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy recognizing the system as a leading example of low-emission urban mobility. The initiative was highlighted for its innovative use of waterways as a sustainable public transport corridor, reducing reliance on road-based travel and associated emissions.

Operating a fleet of 78 electric-hybrid vessels, the Water Metro connects Kochi’s ten inhabited islands while significantly lowering carbon output per passenger journey. By shifting commuters from congested road networks to water-based transport, the system reduces fuel consumption, air pollution, and traffic-related emissions. ITDP estimates notable carbon savings per passenger-kilometre compared with conventional road transport.

In addition to emissions reductions, the Water Metro supports more efficient land use and promotes cleaner, quieter urban transport. The project demonstrates how water-based electric mobility can contribute to climate goals while improving access and environmental performance in coastal cities.
