Nylon Biorecycling Plants
Epoch Biodesign's Large Nylon Recycling Plant Uses AI-Engineered Enzymes
Laura McQuarrie — May 16, 2026Epoch Biodesign announced that it is establishing Europe’s first and the world’s largest nylon 6,6 biorecycling demonstration plant at Grapht Works, Imperial College London's new advanced manufacturing facility. Set to open in Q3 2026, this recycling plant will process post-consumer nylon 6,6 waste from apparel, automotive and industrial applications with AI-engineered enzymes, turning end-of-life nylon waste into virgin-quality monomers at low, energy-efficient temperatures and with significantly reduced carbon emissions. Describing this process, Epoch Biodesign founder and CEO Jacob Nathan noted, "It does not demand the heavy industrial infrastructure that has historically meant manufacturing must be sited far from where people live and work.”
The demonstration plant is strategically designed to help brands and manufacturers comply with upcoming EU regulations under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. Soon, this regulation will ban the destruction of unsold garments and create demand for solutions like this one.
