The UAE Takes Part in the Svalbard Treaty
Debra John — April 7, 2026The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has joined the Svalbard Treaty, strengthening its role in Arctic research partnerships with a focus on environmental protection and climate science.
Formalized through Federal Decree No. 125 of 2025, this step reflects the UAE’s commitment to studying and safeguarding fragile polar ecosystems that are highly sensitive to climate change. The Svalbard archipelago serves as a critical location for monitoring environmental shifts, including ice melt, biodiversity loss, and atmospheric changes.
By joining the treaty, the UAE supports principles of sustainable research and responsible access to Arctic resources. This complements its existing involvement in Antarctic research, enabling a broader contribution to global climate knowledge. Through the Emirates Polar Program, the UAE aims to advance scientific understanding of polar environments and their role in regulating the Earth’s climate. Participation also enables collaboration with international researchers to support conservation efforts and long-term environmental sustainability.
