Dry Electrode Manufacturing

AM Batteries is Scaling Solvent-Free Battery Electrode Production

AM Batteries is scaling dry electrode manufacturing to make domestic battery production less energy-intensive and more cost-efficient. The Massachusetts-based company’s proprietary Powder-to-Electrode™ platform eliminates the solvent-based wet coating, large drying ovens, and solvent-recovery infrastructure traditionally required to manufacture lithium-ion battery electrodes. According to AM Batteries, the process can reduce electrode manufacturing capital expenditures by up to 40% and operating expenses by more than 50%.

The technology will support a DOE-backed project led by Coreshell Technologies to establish approximately 2 gigawatt-hours of electrode manufacturing and 1.5 gigawatt-hours of cell assembly capacity in the U.S. From a business perspective, lowering equipment and operating costs could make domestic battery manufacturing more competitive while reducing dependence on overseas supply chains. The project could also demonstrate how streamlined production processes can support scalable battery manufacturing for electric vehicle and defense applications.
