ESS Tech signed a Letter of Intent with Juniper Energy to deploy at least 500 MWh of sodium-ion battery storage across multiple projects through 2032, marking a major milestone in ESS Tech's effort to scale non-lithium energy solutions. The partnership's initial project, a 10 MW/80 MWh installation in California, will use ESS Tech's recently launched modular 'Bridge' sodium-ion system and Energy Management System, with commercial operation targeted for 2027.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion systems, ESS Tech's sodium-ion technology relies on abundant, domestically sourced materials, reducing exposure to geopolitical supply chain risks and Foreign Entity of Concern restrictions. The company sees growing demand across utility-scale storage, AI data centers and critical infrastructure as customers seek safer alternatives to traditional battery chemistries.

ESS Tech shows how sodium-ion technology is moving from early deployment toward becoming a credible, large-scale alternative for long-term energy infrastructure planning.
