Battery-Powered Container Ships
Hanwha Power is advancing modular battery-powered ships with a container vessel design that uses removable energy storage units instead of conventional fuel-based propulsion. The battery containers can be handled like regular shipping cargo, allowing operators to replace power units more easily while maintaining efficient use of onboard space. This approach supports electric transportation across regional shipping routes without direct carbon emissions during operation.
The proposed 1,700 TEU vessel incorporates a 151 MWh battery system that receives electricity through port charging infrastructure. Its design recently received Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, marking an important step toward further development.
For maritime operators, interchangeable battery systems could provide greater flexibility in managing vessel energy requirements. The approval also strengthens Hanwha Power's position in electric shipping, supporting its expansion into different vessel sizes and potential opportunities in lower-emission maritime transportation.
