Sodium-Ion Battery Systems

ESS Tech launched 'Bridge,' a modular sodium-ion battery storage system designed to provide utilities, AI data centers, and critical infrastructure operators with a safer alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology. The 1.2 MWh AC battery system integrates cells, power conversion, and battery management software into a 10-foot container that can be stacked to deliver up to 4.8 MWh of capacity within the footprint of a traditional 20-foot container.

Built to eliminate the risk of thermal runaway fires, Bridge requires no complex HVAC or liquid cooling and operates across temperatures ranging from -40°C to 50°C, with a 20-year design life.

ESS Tech's launch, backed by nearly $1 billion in early customer interest, signals that sodium-ion technology is emerging as a scalable contender for long-duration energy storage supporting critical infrastructure.
