Belfast Zoo's Treecycling Repurposes Christmas Trees for Animals
Grace Mahas — January 12, 2026Belfast Zoo launched its annual Treecycling scheme, inviting the public to drop off Christmas trees for free recycling at the facility. Rather than sending the evergreens to landfills, the zoo repurposes them as enrichment tools for its resident animals. Meerkats climb and explore through the branches, elephants munch on the greenery, and Barbary lions roll around in the fragrant pine needles for sensory stimulation.
The program transforms post-holiday waste into multifunctional resources across the zoo grounds. Trees that aren't used directly by animals get chipped and spread as mulch for enclosures and flower beds, creating a closed-loop system for the organic material. The initiative runs through the first week of January, accepting donations from individuals at a clearly marked drop-off point in the bottom car park. It's a practical solution that benefits both the community and the animals; turning seasonal clutter into year-round utility.
