Verified Shipping Retrofit Credits

ClimeCo and Marsoft announced the first issuance of Marsoft GreenScreen carbon credits, a first-of-its-kind program turning verified emissions reductions from vessel retrofits into Gold Standard carbon credits for the global shipping fleet. The methodology, developed in collaboration with the MIT Sea Grant Design Laboratory, has already enrolled more than 350 ships in energy-efficient retrofit technologies.

Shipping accounts for approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and while the International Maritime Organization targets net-zero by 2050, many next-generation fuel and propulsion technologies remain years from commercial viability. GreenScreen bridges that gap by letting shipowners measurably reduce CO2 emissions through retrofits and generate carbon credits from verified reductions, with revenue from credit sales helping fund the upfront cost of retrofit investments.

This first credit issuance signals how retrofit-based carbon markets could provide a scalable financial mechanism for accelerating near-term emissions reductions across the global shipping industry.
