NYK Purchased Durable Carbon Removal Credits From Graphyte's Arkansas Project
Adam Harrie — June 6, 2026NYK has signed an agreement to purchase carbon removal credits from Graphyte's Loblolly project in Arkansas, where biomass residues from agriculture, forestry and wood processing are dried, compressed into dense carbon blocks and stored underground for long-term sequestration. The credits are independently verified through third-party measurement, reporting and verification processes.
The deal addresses residual shipping emissions that cannot be eliminated through efficiency improvements or fuel transitions to LNG, ammonia and methanol. Shipping's long asset lifecycles and uneven zero-emission fuel infrastructure make full decarbonization a gradual process, leaving a role for durable carbon removal credits within broader emissions reduction strategies.
NYK shows how hard-to-abate industries are increasingly incorporating independently verified carbon removal credits into their long-term decarbonization efforts.
