Hyundai Motor Group, in partnership with Enowa—NEOM’s energy and water subsidiary—has completed a pioneering hydrogen mobility trial in Trojena, the mountainous sector of NEOM. The trial deployed the UNIVERSE fuel cell electric coach bus on routes reaching elevations of up to 2,080 meters with gradients as steep as 24 percent, marking the first use of hydrogen-powered vehicles under high-altitude conditions. This operation leveraged NEOM’s first hydrogen refuelling station, installed by Enowa, to demonstrate reliable vehicle performance and fuel-cell viability on demanding terrain, simulating future passenger transport between NEOM’s core business district and its mountain resort area.

This accomplishment builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2024 between Hyundai Motor Group and NEOM’s Mobility sector, under which both parties agreed to explore next-generation zero-emission mobility solutions across the development. With the new trial, Hyundai reinforces its commitment to advancing hydrogen infrastructure in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and cements its role through HTWO—its dedicated hydrogen brand and business platform. Moving forward, Hyundai and Enowa plan to broaden their collaboration on sustainable transport technologies, including expanding refuelling networks and integrating hydrogen systems within NEOM’s smart-city framework.
