Commercialized Wood-Based Productions

UPM Officially Began Commercial Production at Biorefinery

References: upm

UPM’s Leuna biorefinery has commenced commercial production of wood based industrial sugars, marking a transition from commissioning to early commercial operation at the site. The facility, described by UPM as the largest industrial scale investment in biochemicals in Europe, has achieved stable hydrothermal processing and the separation of lignin and sugar streams, a prerequisite for downstream conversion to higher value products. The biorefinery is planned to produce significant volumes of advanced biochemicals with an annual capacity target reported for 2026.

The separated streams enable conversion pathways to renewable glycols and lignin based functional fillers intended for use in polymers, coatings, and other material applications, supporting UPM’s strategy to supply bio based alternatives to fossil derived chemicals and to reduce lifecycle emissions. Early commercialisation focuses on process stability, product qualification, and market development to integrate wood derived feedstocks into existing value chains while scaling production.
