B2U Storage Solutions and Waymo announced a supply agreement to repurpose retired electric vehicle batteries from Waymo's autonomous fleet for grid-scale energy storage systems. The battery packs will be deployed in stationary storage units providing grid services across electricity markets ranging from California to Texas.

The second-life battery approach extends the useful lifespan of lithium-ion packs by several years, enabling them to store excess renewable energy during periods of low demand and dispatch it during peak hours. B2U manages the batteries throughout their second life before directing them to recycling, helping maximize the value of materials that might otherwise be recovered immediately.

B2U and Waymo show how retired EV batteries can be repurposed as grid assets, extending their value while supporting energy storage deployment.
