Local Recycling Expansions
Sheffield City Council Invests in Larger Community Recycling Bins
Kanesa D — March 16, 2026Sheffield City Council has announced a series of recycling updates that will expand both bin capacity and the range of materials residents can recycle.
Beginning this summer, households across the city will start receiving larger blue recycling bins dedicated to paper and cardboard. The upgraded containers will hold 240 litres, helping residents manage higher volumes of recyclable paper and packaging waste.
In addition to the new bin rollout, the council will broaden the types of materials accepted in brown recycling bins starting April 1, 2026. These bins, currently used for glass, metal tins, and plastic bottles, will be updated to accommodate additional items, such as aerosols and certain plastic containers.
Looking ahead, the authority plans to further expand the brown bin stream to include plastic pots, tubs, and trays, as well as foil and beverage cartons. The distribution of the larger blue bins is expected to continue throughout the year, with every household scheduled to receive one by the end of 2026.
